QUAIL REPORT

We did not know what kind of quail season we had until it was over! Even though we did not hunt quail during the season because of the lack of moisture the last two days of the season proved WE STILL HAVE BIRDS and STILL CAN PROVIDE INCREDIBLE HUNTS in spite of the weather. We did have
some old school quail hunters that could not hold out any longer and just had to go.I could not talk them out of a hunt..so what the heck.

Clint Witherspoon guided two quail hunters from the Sooner state and pointed 14 coveys of birds that averaged 15 birds per covey. The conditions were dry but the temperature at the beginning of the hunt was around 39 degrees and held around 60 degrees. It was awesome!

We also had 2 other on their own quail hunters and they found 8 coveys of birds in a day's hunt under extremely windy conditions.

Feb Ted Harmon and his buddy Adam Rice came down from Missouri they had a good hunt even though the winds were horrible. Adam shot 6 hogs in one morning and then shot one more the last morning for a total of 7. Ted shot a nice javalina which he is having mounted. It turned out great for these guys and we look forward to seeing them again, now we need rain, rain, RAIN!!!!! Rance

Feb Dan Reives and John Garber came in with Luke Brough, Tim Brough, Robert Robinson, Douglas Sessions, Byron Sessions, Brad Wingfield, Dave Wingfield, Travis Bullock, Dwayne Bullock, Gary Stone. and Justin Stone all from Colorado for their annual hog hunt. They experienced everything Texas weather had to offer, warm weather and high winds greeted them, and the last day they were given freezing rain with thunder. We had fun dragging a hog out of the canyon while being pelted by ice pellets. All in all it was a good hunt. There were 18 hogs taken with two being trophy boars. All 14 hunters took at least one hog great job guys!!!! Rance

Feb Bob and Christine Ware and their friend Chris Nelsen all came from Colorado for their first time to Ranger Creek. Thye had a hard hunt but they did take one hog. Rick O

QUAIL REPORT
Rance Rich
The quail hunting shows some promise, we are seeing more coveys this year. The deciding factor will be rain. Dry conditions are always tough, making it hard for the dogs to smell the birds. We also offer released bird hunts which can be exciting. Our pheasants are great fliers and runners. They act more like wild birds than pen raised birds. The remainder of the season still has some openings and the hunts will be rewarding, great scenery, friendship and the dog work will add to the shooting that takes place. Oh yeah, and did I mention the food make sure to bring your appetite and if possible bring us some rain when you come to see us!!

DUCK SEASON WRAP UP
Rance Rich

Duck season has been good considering the water conditions. Low water has resulted in fewer areas to hunt. We have spaced hunts out so that our areas rest and are not over hunted. This has helped our success as over half the hunts have resulted in limits. Gadwall and widgeons being gthe largest number taken to date are still here in numbers, the rest of the season should be fairly successful based on the ducks we are seeing.

Goose and cranes have not been nearly as easy to find. Scott Lake is totally dry which is the drawing area for geese. We have not hunted any but are starting to see a few in the wheat fields. The sandhill cranes were here in large numbers in early December. We were seeing several thousand on some of our wheat fields. Since then I have watched the numbers decrease to just a couple hundred using our fields, cold weather freezing up their roosting areas and dry conditions have pushed the majority further south.
